A further Note on the Organ... we hope …

While we are on the subject of fund-raising, and having dealt with “craftsman’s art”, we must turn to “music’s measure”. For several years now, we have enjoyed the fruits of the work undertaken by Music at Bray: concerts, sung services at Easter and Christmas, as well as the weekly excellence of the church choir. The choir, under the direction of our last and current choirmasters, has expanded and brought many new people – importantly including many children – into the church on a regular basis. Sadly, the choir and music in the church is supported by a most inconsistent and idiosyncratic organ! Somehow, through the talents and expertise of the organ tuner Robin, and our organists Paul, Ollie, and Lesley, the organ has been nursed through the past few years.

However, many of you will remember that the organ did finally fail us last Christmas. Fear not! We have a temporary solution to that particular problem; we have been instructed as to where to kick the reluctant instrument! This can only be a temporary strategy, and we are lucky to have organists who will accommodate such a machine and keep it running. The end is without a doubt nigh; various parts of the organ, including the electromechanical switching, have already, or are about to fail. The importance and quality of music at St. Michael’s suggests that a new organ is both well over due and well deserved. This too will require substantial fund-raising.. In the meantime, we will continue to ‘kick’ and care for the ailing instrument.
